Meditation is the science of living for the present and making the efforts to work on the present by detaching from the past and the future. Meditation is the minimisation of the thoughts that we entertain each and every day. Lesser the thoughts lesser the worries... simpler the life. The Self becomes like the still surface of a lake where, one can see the bottom very clearly. This is impossible when the surface is agitated by waves. In the same way, when the mind is still, with no thoughts or desires, we can see the "Self"

When we meditate effectively we bring our mind into its natural state of peace and tranquility. All the influences, good and bad, can be let go during the meditation process.

While meditating we are trying to still the mind, disconnecting from the thoughts and connecting with the inner self or the "consciousness". The effort is to find the real self... who we are? and how can we improve on an ongoing basis. Meditation is not a magic wand but is a slow but sure process working on ones emotional mind and the intellect.
